Silva, who has worked in graphic design and advertising for most of his professional life, conveys his keen passion for earth mysticism in this probing examination of crop circles. Deeply informative and copiously illustrated, this is the most comprehensive look at crop circles to date. He introduces us to farmers, researchers, scientists, mystics, hoaxers, and debunkers. Silva takes us to the scene of the enigma, before, after, and during the appearance of a fresh circle. In Secrets in the Fields, he takes us on an exhilarating firsthand field trip into the heart of the mystery. What is going on?Īuthor Freddy Silva lives in Wessex, the four-county area of southern England that has been host to 90 percent of the world's crop circles. Governments tell us they're hoaxes, but the evidence shows that most are not. Each year the count grows, and the designs get more intricate, even fantastic. Since the 1980s, some 10,000 crop circles have appeared, seemingly by magic, in England and 25 other countries. They leave the grain stalks in swirls, virtually undamaged. They appear at night, complex designs mysteriously imprinted on fields of almost ripened grain. Luck, McCullough writes, also played into the American cause-a vicious winter storm, for example, stalled a British counterattack at Boston, and twice Washington staged improbable, daring escapes when the war could have been lost. Henry Knox, for example, trekked 300 miles each way over harsh winter terrain to bring 120,000 pounds of artillery from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston, enabling the Americans, in a stealthy nighttime advance, to seize Dorchester Heights, thus winning the whole city. In turn, the outclassed Americans used the cover of night, surprise and an abiding hunger for victory to astonishing effect. The British commander, Lord General Howe, perhaps not fully accepting that the rebellion could succeed, underestimated the Americans' ingenuity. Throughout, McCullough deftly captures both sides of the conflict. How did a group of ragtag farmers defeat the world's greatest empire? As McCullough vividly shows, they did it with a great deal of suffering, determination, ingenuity-and, the author notes, luck.Īlthough brief by McCullough's standards, this is a narrative tour de force, exhibiting all the hallmarks the author is known for: fascinating subject matter, expert research and detailed, graceful prose. But for decades, many Americans presumed on their national identity as a substitute for genuine faith in Jesus Christ. In our post-modern culture, this might not make much sense. The is a story that will challenge Americans who think they are Christians to examine the true nature of their faith. But generally, Patrick Harvey was a good narrator of the story. If they are wrong, they lessen our trust in the narrator. Is there no producer present to make sure the narrator gets these things right? - surely it would be easy, with search engines, to say place names properly. Banks by Grantlee Kieza is a brilliant portrayal and biography of Joseph Banks and his voyages of discovery. The narrator made quite a few howlers in pronunciation. He is a Walkley Award finalist and the author of twenty-one acclaimed books, including bestsellers Hudson Fysh, The Kelly Hunters, Lawson, Banks, Macquarie. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Australian and British history. I found the non-Cook sections, before and after the voyages, more interesting, and they certainly showed what a major figure Banks was, not only in science but in public affairs generally, and as a wealthy benefactor for many people and organizations. It was not quite as interesting as the others because I knew so much about Captain Cook's voyages, and Banks' important part in them - but all that had to be told of course. Henry Lawson captured the heart and soul of Australia and its people with greater clarity and truth than any writer before him. I have enjoyed two other biographies by Grantley Kieza, those of Macquarie and Paterson, and this one is of the same high standard. |
